...and now what would be a classic winter chart , this is exactly the set up we need for a real arctic blast and one not dissimilar to 2010. Note the key ingredients:
Greenland high and Scandinavian trough to force the cold south between the 2 and a low pressure system in the southern Atlantic to hold the G-H in place and stop it sinking....
And this evolves to this...
following on from the chart above, note how the block has moved to the southern tip of Greenland allowing the air over Scandinavia and Europe to spill westwards....
....and moving on.....from the archives...the cold is established and a trough moves up from the south west, meets the cold and we have blizzards in the south west..
